Description

Vintage Abney Level / Clinometer Surveying Instrument with Leather Carrying Case

A fascinating vintage precision surveying instrument, believed to be an Abney-type level/clinometer, used for measuring angles, slopes and gradients.

The instrument features a finely graduated 90–0–90 degree scale, together with a percentage gradient scale, vernier scale, adjustable mechanism and spirit-level/sighting arrangement.

It comes with its fitted brown leather carrying case with shoulder strap, along with the separate components shown in the photographs, including the small optical/sighting component and round glass component.

The number 108 can be seen marked on components of the instrument. The significance of this number is unknown and it is therefore not being described as a serial number.

The instrument itself appears to have no visible manufacturer’s name or maker’s mark. The clasp/fitting on the leather case is marked TUCKY; this is not being attributed as the manufacturer of the instrument.

A lovely and unusual piece of vintage scientific and engineering equipment that would appeal to collectors of surveying instruments, engineering tools, scientific equipment or industrial antiques, as well as making a great display/conversation piece.

Condition:
The instrument is in vintage used condition with age-related wear, marks and patina. The leather case also shows wear consistent with its age and use. Please see all photographs for the exact cosmetic condition.

The adjustment mechanism moves, however I have no specialist knowledge of this instrument and it has not been tested for accuracy or calibration. It is therefore sold as a collectable rather than as a certified working surveying instrument.

Included in sale: Instrument, fitted leather carrying case with strap and all loose components shown in the photographs.
